The Nevers of Summer

Just when basketball season ends and all feels lost, here comes summer. The stunning sequel to the Horrors of Spring, the Nevers of Summer are never-ending, never-enough, never so much. The hoop in our driveway was mounted two feet too high which was just off-putting enough it turns out deter anyone from playing for too long. This year we fix all that and with a cozy diy powerwash (ie. a hose and dishsoap) and new mounting bracket worryingly still in transit…

Anyway, back in the City, NEVER ALONE now at at MoMA. A must see and a good time for the entire tech saturated family. Perfect playing consoles for Pac-Man, Atari’s Tempest, it all it’s terrifying impossibility. Also terrifying, the sheer weight and right-above-your-head-ness of the downward facing wall mounted iMacs in John Maeda’s ‘The Reactive Square’ (left).

While we’re here, see also MoMA’s cafe 2 which ranks high on the list of semi-comfortable public locations to have a fight with your family in public, resolve said fight and then have a cookie and Pellegrino. Further reading: The Guggenheim cafe which while ranking close to 0 on the snack scale, makes storming out slightly more lengthy with the prolonged rage-walk down the spiral, the better to cool down we think! Also of note: the new underground cafeteria at the Met- ideal for doing homework on a rainy day/ a hot day/ a smoke filled day/ any day in which nyc is being particularly hellscape-ish. We had sushi which was admittedly sad and desperate. Still a solid outing with an assist from ludicrously tiny colored pencils from the gift shop.

Also on the list of Nevers- scenes below from a mural I started in 2020 when my son and I were sharing a room for remote work/school. I thought I could liven up the frankly kafkaeque scene with a friendly mural of this and that- beasties and beauties from here and there. Some progress has been made over the last few years but it does seem like once begun, never done is where we live.
